Friendship Quilt for Ukraine
Each term in sewing club we discuss with the children what project we will take on next. One of the children said that it would be lovely to make something for the children in Ukraine and suggested soft toys. Rosie has been helping to reinvent the Design Technology syllabus in the school and knew that quilting was one of the topics for this term so suggested instead, that we make a friendship quilt for School 73 in Lviv, with whom the Oasis Academy is twinned.
In preparation, the children have written their name on a square piece of paper which Rosie has transferred onto fabric.
This past week The Scrubbery team have been beavering away in classes 3, 4, 5 and 6 for three hourly morning sessions to show the children how to embroider their name on their personalised square. These should be completed by the end of term and the quilt will be made around them and then a friendship pattern added into the border.
The Scrubbery team and Sewing Club will be doing the heavy lifting in making up the quilt. Part of the fabric used will be scraps from the scrubs made for St. Nicholas’ Children’s Hospital in Lviv. The assembly will take place in the summer holidays and Rosie is planning to prioritise the quilt over some other Scrubbery work in order to complete the project in time. We are aiming to have the work completed by the end of September and could do with your help.
PLEASE DO COME IN TO CUT SQUARES, EMBROIDER YOUR NAME, HELP WITH THE QUILT, MAKE COFFEE. Let Rosie know in advance if you will be coming in on any of these starting dates - more will be added. It seems like a lovely opportunity for all of the people usually working from home, or haven’t been in for a while, to come in to meet others.

Thanks to team at The Scrubbery and The Parish of Putney, 25 mobile phones, a laptop and an iPad have been delivered to Lviv. In addition, Gareth and his amazing team in Forest Green have donated a huge number of tools, drill bits, a petrol generator, (Rosie says it was very heavy) handsaws, a climbing harness and high visibility vests and a 4.1 metre (when folded) extension ladder which required a bit of thought to attach. We also sent several bags of men’s clothing and boots suitable for the military. Thank you so much to everyone who helps, we couldn’t do this without you.
