Spring 2025 Update

Survive and Thrive Day on April 28th

Suzy and Rosie attended this event run by the London School of Paediatrics at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Education Centre. The day was dedicated to the professional and personal well-being of the participants. Events included training and workshops, yoga, live comedy, creative workshops and therapy days. Suzy and Rosie took the camo net, now complete and handed over to the military in Ukraine, and distributed nearly 60 of the recently finished well-being bags.

These included a new item, the desk caddy, soap, scrunchies, sewing kit, compressed face cloth, face mist and cream, biscuits, tea (Fortnum’s), coffee, a toothbrush and toothpaste, an inspirational sticker and Thank you cards from The Scrubbery and people in the community. They were much appreciated. Well done everyone.

Quilts

A special thank-you goes to Saida who is making these beautiful quilt tops from our offcuts at the hub and to Karen who is quilting them on her long arm quilting machine.

Movie Night

This was a very successful fund-raiser to buy classroom topic books for the library. The school hall was darkened and cushions, rugs and bean bags spread on the floor. About 50 children came to watch The Wild Robot and to consume popcorn. The Scrubbery borrowed Fong’s small popcorn machine and volunteers popped popcorn in shifts. The event raised £500 and a great time was had by all.

Storage

A cage was donated by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to hold fabric rolls safely. This was organised by Fong and really made our day. This will help Rosie’s efforts  to clear the balcony. James kindly collected it for us on his pickup truck.

Ukraine

Several shipments were sent out this month, on the 6th and 9th May, including finished camouflage nets.

As you may recall, Rosie and the MP from Lviv Natalia Pipa, have instigated a twinning of Oasis Academy Putney with school 73 in Ukraine. They have regular live calls between school 73 and Oasis Academy Putney. Rosie ran the call last week and each person on the call had to say how they were special. Rosie talked briefly about what we do in the Scrubbery and said that this was what made us special. In doing so she showed a camouflage net being made and this has inspired a group of children from Oasis to join in and help the Scrubbery make the nets more quickly.

Call out

Please donate old mobile phones with or without chargers.

The military fix them to telegraph poles and use them as listening devices for drones flying overhead. The phones form part of an early warning system to protect the civilian population.

Also needed is sunblock and mosquito repellent as summer approaches and all of the usual medical equipment and medicines.
